Insurance is a way to hedge the risk of a possible loss on an asset that a person or entity cannot afford. The cost of the coverage is determined by risk and exposure to the insurer and reflected in the premium.
Another way to say it is: don’t buy insurance when you can afford the loss. If you have a mortgage on your home, you must have insurance. It is probably prudent for most people to have property insurance but certain coverage might be avoided because you can afford the loss if you were to have an occurrence.
Call your current agent and review your insurance coverage. Ask if there are any available discounts whether your property qualifies for now or after certain improvements are made. Monitored alarm systems, dead bolts, smoke detectors, updated electrical, certain types and ages of roofs among other things may be eligible for individual discounts.
Compare the newly revised coverage and premium with other reputable agencies and insurers. Shopping can be time consuming but experts agree that the exercise can be valuable and should be considered every few years.
Deductibles are an easy way to affect the premium based on the initial amount of loss that the insured wants to assume. The higher the deductible, the lower the premium. Determine the amount of risk you want to assume and select an appropriate deductible.
Consider bundling your home and auto policies for possible discounts and leverage for better service.
Don’t become a co-insurer. Most policies stipulate that a building must be insured for at least a certain percentage, usually 80% of its insured value to be able to collect the full amount of a partial loss. Insured value is not always the same as market value. The land is not considered in the value but replacement cost of the dwelling is.
It isn’t possible to purchase insurance after a loss; it must be purchased before a loss is incurred. Premiums are based on careful analysis of insurer’s loss and overhead expense plus a profit. As a homeowner and an insured, it would be equally wise to analyze coverage, claim service, your risk tolerance and the premium you’ll pay for that coverage.

Best Of Chickasaw Country Winners
It’s time to announce the 2014 Best of Chickasaw Country winners! I know you have been on pins and needles anxiously waiting to see who had the most votes. The votes are in, calculated, and the winners have been chosen. I’ll stop gabbing and cut to the chase.
Bedré Fine Chocolate
Located in Davis, Oklahoma, this chocolate factory is a unique flavor destination. You can follow them on Facebook and Twitter to get a behind scene look to what makes this chocolate so special. My favorite has to be the dark chocolate crisps. They will change your life!
Best BBQ Joint:
This unique BBQ joint has defended its title; they are now the Best BBQ Joint two years in a row. That should speak enough about how truly amazing this joint is. I am a big fan of their fresh cut French fries and the extra hot BBQ sauce. If you like it spicy and are up for a challenge, make a request for that stuff. It will light you up! Don’t forget to check them out on Facebook.
Prairie Rose Gifts and Collectibles
This little boutique calls itself “Downtown Duncan’s best kept secret!” Well, not anymore—the secret is out! This boutique is filled with trendy clothing, accessories, and unique gift items. Make sure to find them on Facebook to see their new arrivals and sale alerts!
Wow! Talk about keeping it real, Newcastle Casino did it again! Back to back Best Casino in Chickasaw Country—they must be doing something right folks! They have over 83,000 square feet of games for you to check out and cool concerts in the summer. No surprise that this place took home the title again. You need to check them out on Facebook and Twitter because this casino has game. See what I did there?
Best Family-Friendly Venue:
Lazer Zone Family Fun Center
I am pretty excited about this one, folks! This family fun center is located in Ada, Oklahoma, and can keep your little ones entertained for hours on end. There is everything you could ever want to play and more. Not to mention sweet prizes, Dippin Dots, and Splat. Who is Splat? Splat is the cutest green alien that is plastered all over Lazer Zone. Heck, if you are lucky enough, you might even see him while you are there. Check out their Facebook and Twitter for updates—they even have some pretty sweet deals from time to time.
Okie Noodling Festival
Ladies and gentlemen, the Okie Noodling Festival did it again, taking home the prize for Best Festival in Chickasaw Country! Imagine this: 20,000 + people gather in Wacker Park in Pauls Valley to celebrate the sport of noodling. This festival is a blast. If you want in on the action, add it to your calendar for June 21, 2014. Hope to see you there!
Best Golf Course:
WinStar Golf Course
WinStar Golf Academy and WinStar Golf Course are located right on the Oklahoma/Texas border. Did you know that it’s a 27-hole Championship Golf Course? Sounds like I have some investigating to do! Follow them on Facebook and Twitter for everything you need to know about golf.
This lake is right on the Red River between Oklahoma and Texas. Talk about popular! This lake attracts over 6 million visitors a year, no wonder it had the most votes. It’s close to the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex—so I better see you soon, Texans! You can enjoy the water, fishing, camping, and outdoor fun.
Best Live Performance Venue:
Can’t get enough country and red dirt music? Well, sounds like you need a visit to the Arbuckle Ballroom in Davis, Oklahoma. This unique convert venue has a cool Honky Tonk feel and makes you want to boot, scoot, and boogie all night long! Not to mention it is the “Best Live Performance Venue” two years and running.
Dust off your dancing shoes; it’s time for a night out!
The Artesian Hotel
This world-class hotel, spa, and resort is located in Sulphur, Oklahoma—just across from the Chickasaw National Recreation Area. There is everything you need within walking distance: fabulous shopping, dining options, outdoor actives, a relaxing spa, and a beautiful indoor-outdoor pool. This is the perfect destination for any occasion. For more information and photos, make sure to check out their Facebook and Twitter.
Chickasaw Cultural Center
Named on the 50 states, 50 spots for 2014 from CNN Travel:
“Walk through the Removal Corridor to see the bleak journey of the Chickasaw Nation to Oklahoma. Experience it at the Chickasaw Cultural Center, a space that allows visitors to follow the Chickasaw Nation’s pre-Oklahoma life through today. The center, which opened in 2010 and sits on more than 100 acres of Chickasaw land in Sulphur, offers visitors the opportunity to see traditional dwellings, join a stomp dance’s inner circle and taste Chickasaw culture at the Aaimpa’ Café, where grape dumplings, Indian fry bread and pashofa (a dish made of hominy and pork similar to corn soup) are served.”
Best Overall Dinning:
Located inside of SaltCreek Casino, Fork Café is the place to go for down home food. Their menu is loaded with burgers, dinners, specials, soups, salads and my favorite—the side dishes. Does it get any better than fried okra dipped in ranch dressing? The answer is no, my friends. Let’s not forget about mac ‘n cheese, mashed potatoes, and hush puppies. My mouth is watering just thinking about all of this goodness!
Wowza! That is a big list! Fist bump, congratulations to all of the winners! – See more at: http://chickasawcountry.com/blog/view/best-of-chickasaw-country-winners#sthash.WOQndge5.dpuf
